Bridges Q & A

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a prosthetic device comprising two or more crowns that span the space between missing teeth. Whether teeth are lost due to decay or trauma, a bridge effectively fills the gap and restores dental function.

What are the advantages of a dental bridge?

Beyond cosmetic enhancement, a dental bridge offers numerous benefits, including:

Improved chewing ability Maintenance of tooth alignment Preservation of facial structure Enhanced speech clarity Prevention of adjacent teeth shifting Failure to address missing teeth can lead to oral health issues and impact overall dental function.

What types of dental bridges are available?

Dental bridges come in four main types:

Maryland dental bridge: anchored by a metal framework affixed to adjacent teeth Cantilever bridge: supported by a crown on one side Traditional dental bridge: secured by crowns on both sides Implant-supported bridge: anchored to dental implants fused to the jawbone How is a dental bridge installed?

Installation of a dental bridge typically involves multiple visits to Kalemi Dental P.C. Following an initial assessment to confirm suitability for a bridge, your teeth are prepared during a subsequent appointment to accommodate the crowns.

During this visit, the dentist numbs the surrounding gum tissue and reshapes the teeth intended to support the bridge. Subsequently, impressions of the teeth are taken to fabricate the permanent bridge. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth until the permanent bridge is ready.

Once the permanent bridge is fabricated, it is securely affixed to the teeth during a final appointment.

What is the lifespan of a dental bridge?

With proper care, a dental bridge can last up to 10 years. However, early displacement may occur due to decay beneath the crowns.

To prolong the lifespan of your bridge:

Maintain good oral hygiene through regular brushing and flossing Attend scheduled follow-up appointments Follow a balanced diet If you’re considering a dental bridge to address missing teeth, the experienced team at Kalemi Dental P.C. is here to assist you.
